SLC 5/03, 5/04 and 5/05 discontinued: what Rockwell listed, and the three routes people take

Rockwell discontinued the SLC 5/03, 5/04 and 5/05 processor families in two waves. The 16K variants — 1747-L541 (SLC 5/04) and 1747-L551 (SLC 5/05) — went on December 31, 2021. The rest — 1747-L532 and 1747-L533 (SLC 5/03), 1747-L542 and 1747-L543 (SLC 5/04), 1747-L552 and 1747-L553 (SLC 5/05) — followed on March 31, 2024.

Rockwell's page for the 1747-L533 names the 5380 as the engineering replacement.

The rest of the rack went with them. The 1746-A7 chassis was discontinued March 31, 2024 with "No planned RA replacement," and the 1746-P2 and 1746-P4 power supplies on September 30, 2024, also with no planned replacement.

What Rockwell publishes

Rockwell lists the 1747-AENTR SLC 500 EtherNet/IP Adapter with lifecycle status "End of Life," and states that as of February 15, 2027 it will be discontinued and no longer available for sale. Category: Engineering Replacement.

Meridian's read: the adapter most often used to keep SLC I/O on an Ethernet network now has a discontinuation date of its own, roughly eighteen months out. We treat that as a reason to decide deliberately rather than by default, not as a reason to buy anything today. One pattern in the verified set: the 16K variants — 1747-L541 and 1747-L551 — were discontinued on December 31, 2021, roughly two years before the larger-memory processors in this table, which went on March 31, 2024.

Route 1 — Keep the system running

The cheapest answer is usually the boring one. A discontinued controller is not a failed controller, and a rack that has run for twenty years will probably run for a few more. What changes is that the replacement no longer comes from Rockwell, so the part has to come from the secondary market, and the condition and testing matter more than they used to.

Route 2 — Keep the I/O, change the CPU

If the wiring is the expensive part, and it usually is, there is a middle route that leaves the field wiring alone and replaces only the processor.

What SoftPLC publishes

SoftPLC Corporation (Spicewood, Texas) publishes a NeoPAC controller configured for SLC-500 migration with one Allen-Bradley "blue-hose" RIO scanner port, and states the approach lets a user "continue to use existing SLC I/O."

Meridian's read: this route is interesting when the I/O and field wiring are sound and the cost of rewiring is what makes a migration expensive. The split is clean — the NeoPAC controller comes from SoftPLC, and the 1747-ASB RIO adapter that sits in the existing rack is a legacy Allen-Bradley part that Meridian sources. We introduce the approach as a manufacturer-supported option and we do not assess whether it suits any particular system. SoftPLC does that analysis directly with the customer, which is the right place for it.

Route 3 — Re-platform

Rockwell's own answer. The 5380 is named as the engineering replacement for the 1747-L533, and the 5069-AENTR is named for the 1747-SN.

What to verify before you commit

  • Exact catalog number, including the series letter
  • Whether the unit was actually tested, and what the warranty covers
  • Your processor's support for whatever you are adding

When none of this is urgent

A running SLC 500 with a spare on the shelf is not an emergency. The dates have passed and nothing changes for you this month. If the line is already funded for migration in the next year or two, buying deep processor spares is money you will not get back.
